Top Ten Signs the Standards Movement Might be Dead

March 24, 2006 11:20 AM

10)  Susan Ohanian's infinite supply of outrage has finally brought us standardistos to our knees.

9)   John Stossel is subbing in an NYC English class this week, and he says he's going to show "10 Things I Hate About You" every single day.

8)   California's standards are way too high.

7)   California's standards are pretty good.

6)   Duke lost.  (Has nothing to do with standards, but it makes me happy. GEAUX TIGERS!)

5)   With the arrival of Eduwonk's twins (congrats!), the once acerbic blogger will go all soft and mushy and the whole education blogosphere is sure to go straight to hell in a handbasket.

4)   If you play the Al Shanker podcast (slow download!) backwards, you can hear him saying, "Standards, schmandards."

3)   Four out of five teachers recommend standards, but not one has heard of this so-called movement.

2)   Remember when you were single and you'd find yourself alone at the Dubliner (no, I mean on a night like this) and you'd lower your standards?  That's how the standards movement feels right about now.

And the number one sign the standards movement might be dead is...the College Board has announced it's going to outsource SAT test scoring to the Slovak Republic.
