New Orleans Offers Storage Pod to Lure Teachers
September 14, 2006 05:11 PM
In an attempt to get "the best and brightest teachers to return to New Orleans," New Orleans is giving teachers...a large walk-in closet to live in.
This isn't a temporary classroom; it's a FEMA-supplied housing unit for teachers. The district has created obstacles for certified, highly qualified teachers who are eager to return to New Orleans schools. But state officials brag that these storage pods -- at a cost of $56,000 a pop -- show their "commitment to helping displaced teachers find their way home and encouraging others around the country to take a chance and join us." Ugh. They should try Katrina cottages instead.

What IS this thing? Some kind of joke? Do they really expect people to LIVE in it?
It looks like a gorilla crate. I'm calling it the "uBox" as in a soviet-era knock off of housing by Steve Jobs. This can't be for real -- seriously!
Come on folks, let's stop wasting money on BOXES and let's get on with rebuilding our city and its public schools. How's that for an incentive?

Shameful! As a country we do more in foreign countries than we do at home.
