I can’t imagine how difficult it is to be a Los Angeles school board member in charge of selecting the next superintendent of LAUSD schools. But, from the point of view of an outsider looking in, it seems like the board made some pretty questionable decisions.
First, it seems like one prerequisite for heading the nation’s second largest district would be heading any school district.
Second, after just inking a deal to share authority over the schools with the mayor, and with the mayor saying he wants a say in the final pick, the school board chooses the new guy when the mayor is out of town.
Not that anyone should want the job (School Me—the LATimes blog— handicapped any current LAUSD official in their superintendent predictions: "If you work within LAUSD and still want the job having seen how tough it is, you can’t be smart enough to handle it.")
That said, for the sake of LA’s students, all the best to Mr. Brewer, and it would be great if the LA powers that be lined up in support.
