Faculty Bias Studies: Science or Propaganda

January 21, 2007 09:02 PM

This blog rarely delves into higher ed, but we want to highlight a new report from our friends at Free Exchange.  Faculty Bias Studies: Science or Propaganda looks at the spate of studies claiming that liberal bias in academia is creating a generation of tree-hugging, politically correct college grads.  It turns out the researchers who made that claim repeatedly dropped the ball -- kind of like the New Orleans Saints.

I can see why that study would be weak (loaded words and probably huge bias). However, I have spoken to an anthropology professor, nuclear engineering professor, and nuclear health physicist professor (none of which really know each other or are pals) - and all agreed that freshman entering are simply not prepared for college through their writing or math capabilities.

In addition, I highly suspect the K12 education that I received from 1975 to 1987 is vastly different than the K12 education people have received over the past 15 years. We have gone from more of a direct instruction type of education with emphasis on formulas, basic memorized facts to a constructivist education. Some of the constructivists don't even teach math facts in the elementary schools - and it hampers the teachers from 5th grade on.
